Big Boy Bedroom
It’s raining babies up here in Seattle. There have been 7 babies born in our community group in just 22 months. Plus we’ve got two more (in the same uterus, I might add) on the way! That’s a lot of pregnant bellies, baby-wearing, Boppys, and Bumbos. It’s been so much fun to celebrate with everyone as they start their families. Jason and I have found it incredibly joyful to walk alongside so many of our friends in this new season of their lives and ohmygoodness, all the squishy babies!
Personally, I noticed two distinct feelings emerge as I observed all the expanding waistlines and swollen ankles…
1. Awww, I kind of wish I was pregnant right now! I wish I had been pregnant with all of my nearest and dearest friends. It was with a slightly painful feeling of wistfulness that I snapped pictures of four of my girlfriends in front of our house on Easter Sunday last Spring. You know the one. Where they all stand in profile in order of due dates. So fun! When I was pregnant, there was nobody to stand in line with me. It was just me. Would have been grand to experience such a profound time of life with a few friends. At one point last Spring, Jason and I were both feeling swept up in the excitement of it all and we thought about having one more. But then we thought maybe we should get a dog instead. And ultimately, that we didn’t even feel like getting a dog because even THAT sounded too hard. And I’ve been so fortunate to have found a group of women to meet with every week who have kids and were pregnant at the same time (I just didn’t know them then) who have been a wonderful support to me and very dear friends.
2. Thank the sweet stars I’m not pregnant again! While I experienced pangs of sadness on occasion, this second feeling was definitely the dominant one. Obviously. Or else this might have been a post with two pink lines and ultrasound pictures. I actually had a pretty rough go when I was pregnant. I felt dreadful my first trimester. Like death. Or worse. I don’t know. I’m exaggerating. But it was rough. Second trimester was blissful, I’ll admit, but by the third, I moved back toward miserable with alarming speed, especially the second go ’round. And then there is the sleeping situation. Or lack of sleeping. Anyhow, I can’t help but feel like I’ve paid my dues and I’m much happier to be the helpful friend who’s been there and lived to tell.
So anyhow, somewhere among all the new nurseries and baby paraphernalia, I realized that our boys were actually outgrowing their bedroom. That we had been holding on to the nursery and baby stuff but they were ready for a change, for a space more suitable to their needs and interests now that they are both “big boys.”
I forgot to snap some “before” pictures but here are the “after” photos.
We bought a pack of road sign decals to decorate the room and I picked the YIELD for the door on purpose. I wanted it to be a reminder that it’s a shared space so some yielding will be necessary. Needless to say, they don’t get this yet.
The rest of the road sign decals over the bookshelf. I looked into getting ACTUAL road signs but that was completely out of the budget. I took down the old striped curtains that we had in their nursery at the old house and put up these navy ones. I made large floor pillows for a corner reading nook near the window.
I moved the dresser/changing table into the closet (which the boys now call their “dressing room”) and put this desk in it’s place. The room is quite small and at first I couldn’t figure how to fit in a desk, much less two. So I bought this floating shelf from Ikea and mounted it to the wall myself (yes, yes, I found the studs… women can do that – shocking, I know). The chairs are also from Ikea and each boy has their own box for pencils, crayons, scissors and tape.
Each boy got a reading light (orange snake-like thing) for reading in bed. And they both got a ‘KEEP OUT’ decal for their bed because their beds are their own private space and nobody can get in without their permission. Or so the theory goes.
And my first (sort of shoddy) attempt at printable art. It says, “And now…(left) let the wild rumpus start! (right)” from Where the Wild Things Are.
I hadn’t even finished their room when it dawned on me that our “playroom” on the main floor needed a major overhaul as well. We had some friends over with their 18-month-old and she reveled in the space, playing with all the toys and cruising around the train table. But I realized that day that the toys were more age-appropriate for her and that our boys were in the room less and less as the months moved forward. So that space got a makeover as well. I’ll post pictures of that next time. I’m discovering that even though I might not be outfitting a nursery and picking out cribs anymore, these kids grow crazy fast and there is a lot of creativity and decorative energy that can be spent on big kids, too.
How fun! I love their new room! What a genius space-saving idea to make a shelf be their desk. Very clever. 🙂
Thanks for all your love and support for us new mamas. We are lucky to have you. I have thought so many times.. aww i wish i had know how to be there more for Nancy when she was a new mom. ( its so true you just ” get it” after you have a kid) The new room looks great.. nice job.. look forward to pics of the playroom :).
so many of my convos with new moms involve someone, if not myself, saying something like, “well nancy told me to try this and it worked!” or “nancy said that when she went through this…” or “nance helped me do this…”
what would we have done if you hadn’t come before us? you’ve been an incredible friend and guide through this exciting but at times scary parts of our lives. thank you for your willingness to be there for us in a way we weren’t there for you. although, jack and i tried really hard to join you guys your second time around. just wasn’t in the cards. the new room looks great! i’m sure the boys love it!
Totally echo what MelloCello said! The boys’ new room looks awesome!!! And I love how the downstairs playroom isn’t just for the boys now! 😉 Here’s to big boys!
